Bymien Picnic Area
Kicking off from Outdoor Adventure Australia’s home base in Coolum we started early and headed into Rainbow Beach to meet Epic Ocean Adventures for transfer into Bymien Picnic Area. where we would be dropped off for our adventure. Bymien Picnic area is a lovely little spot about 4km out of Rainbow Beach off Freshwater drive. After a thorough introductory/information session with Kris from Outdoor Advneture Australia we headed out on our 10km hike to Freshwater Camp Grounds. The hike winds through lush rainforest of the Great Sandy National Park, past Poona Lake which is a great little swimming spot. Poona lake is reddy-brown in colour from the native trees staining the water but quite safe for a dip. From there, continue on along the Cooloola Great Walk trail which winds through the forest over some fairly gentle hills past Freshwater lake and finally landing at Freshwater Campground. This is a very popular camping spot for 4wd lovers as it is easy access from here onto Teewah Beach. The camping area has full facilities, toilets, hot showers, rubbish bins, free gas BBQ’s in the nearby day-use area (not at the actual camp ground) and even an old-school telephone. Located just 600m walk along the track to the beach where you can fish, find pippy’s, watch the sunrise/sunset, walk for miles or just relax…just be careful as it is a 4wd area. After setting up camp the afternoon was spent swimming, fishing and relaxing on the stunning Teewah beach…what better way to end a hard days hiking! As night fell we made our way back to camp to find out what freeze dried delicacies awaited for dinner, while freeze dried meals may not be restaurant quality i have to admit my Chili Con Carne was very tasty. Adding to the experience of course is cooking on our lightweight ‘stoves’, trading dinners and debating what of the many snack options to have with my hot chocolate for desert.
After a fantastic night filled with laughs and admittedly not much sleep (it is camping after all) we packed our bags and set off for our return trip to Bymien and lunch at the Rainbow Beach SLSC ….YUM!! I highly recommend this adventure, it’s challenging, fun and spectacular scenery makes it a very unique experience. I always find these sorts of adventures bring people together very quickly creating fast friendships that can last a lifetime.
